Which Chassis is Best for You?

Thor Motor Coach offers Class C motorhomes in all different forms, including diesel pushers, toy haulers, Sprinters and gas-powered. So how do you know which is right for your lifestyle? We’re here to help you determine the first step of buying your motorhome: which chassis is best for you.

All Class C Chassis Options:

First, let’s simply break down the different chassis options by Class C type:

Gas Powered:

  • Ford E-Series Chassis (Standard for Chateau, Four Winds, Quantum, Quantum LC, Outlaw Toy Hauler)
  • Chevrolet Chassis (Optional for Chateau, Four Winds, Quantum)


Diesel Powered:

  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis (Standard for Delano, Tiburon; Optional for Four Winds, Chateau and Quantum)
  • Ford F-550 (Standard for Omni and Magnitude)


Chassis Engine Breakdown:

If you like to know how much grunt your motorhome’s engine has, then check out the Class C engine breakdown:

Ford E-Series Chassis:

  • 7.3-liter V-8 gas engine with 350 horsepower and 468 lb.-ft. of torque


Chevrolet Chassis:

  • 6.0-liter V-8 gas engine with 323 horsepower and 373 lb-ft. of torque


Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis:

  • 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine with 188 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque


Ford F-550:

  • 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 (4x4 or 4x2, depending on floor plan) turbo diesel engine with 330 horsepower and 825 lb.-ft. of torque


Chassis Size and Towing Capacity:

As you consider which chassis is best for you, think about how long of a motorhome that you feel comfortable driving and whether or not you’ll be pulling a trailer or car on the hitch. You want to be confident that your Class C motorhome has the right towing capacity for your needs.

Ford E-Series Chassis:

  • Varies in size depending on floor plan, ranging from 24 to 33 feet. Hitch weight rating is 8,000lbs.


Chevrolet Chassis:

  • Varies in size depending on floor plan, ranging from 24 to 30 feet. Hitch weight rating is 8,000lbs.


Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis:

  • Varies in size depending on floor plan, ranging from 24 to 26 feet. Hitch weight rating is 5,000lbs.


Ford F-550:

  • Varies in size depending on floor plan, ranging from 33 to 37 feet. Hitch weight rating is 10,000lbs.
