I’m back at my desk again after a blur of holiday activities followed by a blur of getting my family back into a routine.
Not only is this a busy time of year for most of us, but also the time of year for resolutions (hope for the future) and reflection (learning from the past). As I think back over 2016, I can’t help feeling that Big Lou (our 2016 Thor Motor Coach A.C.E) had the biggest impact on my year. Or perhaps Big Lou was simply transporting me to discover all the little things that had the biggest impact on my year.
Our first and biggest road trip through America’s South Eastern region was an absolute blast! It was also the longest vacation we’ve ever taken. It stretched from June 25th – July 27th. An amazing 5 weeks of seeing new places, tasting new food, learning all about our new RV, and learning how to avoid cabin fever with two small kids during inclement weather.
I saw my kids swim in the ocean for the first time (although, I think it was technically the Gulf of Mexico- tomato/tomato), try new things, experience mountains and beaches and forests. It was an amazing experience for me to simply watch them have so many memorable adventures.
I learned that I don’t like coffee from a French press (or maybe I’m just doing something wrong), that I can get my kids to eat anything from calamari to boudin balls in New Orleans if I call them “circle French fries” and “meatballs,” and I learned that if I don’t do the dishes as soon as dinner’s over, I’ll really regret it in the morning.
I learned how to drive a huge (at least it’s huge to me) RV through all sorts of situations like toll booths, around broken down cars on a fast highway, through busy cities, and over narrow bridges. I learned how to set up and tear down the RV from a campsite with ease; how to find great boondocking spots at midnight; and how to tow a car on a dolly.
Most importantly, I learned to be able to do all these things on my own. With this independence, I can take advantage of amazing girls-only weekend trips or take the kids out solo without my hubby around.
I’m all about empowerment and tackling impossible situations. Not just in a “girl power” kind of way, but in a “people power” kind of way. I love hearing stories of people taking risks and gaining great personal reward!
My 2017 resolution is to continue another year of fun-filled firsts, and I encourage every one of you to join me in this resolution. 2017 will be a year of adventure, traveling farther, and achieving greater accomplishments. It’s going to be a year of expanding my horizons and risking failure to gain personal pride and confidence.
And I’m happy to say it’s going to be another year of grand adventures in Big Lou.
