Get and Stay Fit while on the Road in Your RV

Posted on January 9, 2017

If you're planning to hit the wide open road in your motorhome for an extended period of time, you might think that exercise will have to fall by the wayside until you return. In reality, maintaining a fitness routine while on extended road trips is easier than you probably think--and more important than you probably think too. Those long hours of sitting behind the wheel should be balanced out by periods of physical activity, and there are lots of opportunities to get your heart pumping in between. Pick up some great tips for getting and staying fit while exploring the world in your RV below.

Avoid Negative Health Consequences

When most people think of vacation time, they envision days on end of lounging about and relaxing. However, we feel our best when we move around here and there too, and that's especially important when our travels have us steering huge motorhomes around for hours on end. An overly sedentary lifestyle can lead to many health consequences, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

The good news is that even just 20 to 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day makes a big difference. There are plenty of ways to get it too--even when traveling the country in a toy hauler or other vehicle. Familiarize yourself with some of the best exercise options for those who travel in RVs to ensure that you feel your very best throughout all of your adventures.

Get a Membership at a Nationwide Gym

Always have someplace nearby where you can duck in to break a sweat by signing up for a membership at gym that has locations across the country. Happily, the days of spending a small fortune to keep a membership are over. Chains like Planet Fitness put the emphasis on affordability. For a very reasonable monthly price, you should never be too far from a gym where you can squeeze in quick workouts while on the road.

Explore Different Outdoor Activities

A great gas RV opens up all kinds of exciting opportunities, including many to take in some of the most amazing outdoor scenery in the world. Don't just be a passive observer, though. Try out different outdoor activities to find ones that you can enjoy while exploring the world. Some great examples include:

  • Walking or Hiking - One of the best things about walking or hiking for exercise is that the barrier for entry is very low. At the most, you'll need comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes and a decent pair of shoes or hiking boots. Make sure to bring your camera along on your explorations too.
  • Jogging or Running - For those who really want to get their hearts pumping, jogging and running are very accessible activities. A decent pair of running shoes is all that you need to get started. As you get more into it, you might consider investing in more comfortable running clothes too, but it's certainly not required. You'll have a blast running past some of the best scenery in the world, and you'll feel great too!
  • Cycling - Whether you own a class A motorhome, a class C motorhome or a different type of RV, you can always find room to bring a bicycle or two along. Try your hand at road biking and mountain biking to see which you prefer. Either way, opportunities to enjoy different types of cycling abound across the country, and it's a wonderful way to see the world from a different perspective.
  • Swimming - This outdoor activity is a bit more limited because you will need access to either a body of water or a swimming pool. However, swimming is a great, low-impact exercise, so if you have aches and pains, you might consider making it your go-to form of exercise. As an added bonus, many motorhome parks have on-site swimming pools.

Stay on Track During Inclement Weather with Indoor Activities

As nice as it is to be active outdoors, it's not always possible. The right gas or diesel RV will afford you enough room to engage in at least a certain degree of indoor physical activity. With a little creativity, you can stay on track with your exercise routine even when the weather just won't cooperate. Here are two great suggestions:

  • Free Weights - Invest in a small set of free weights, and then learn some basic routines from a book, a website, an app or another resource. There are all kinds of online weight-lifting tutorials out there, so putting together a routine that works for you shouldn't prove to be too difficult.
  • Yoga - In addition to making you limber and toned, yoga helps to clear your mind and to achieve a peaceful balance from within. Consider taking a few classes to learn how to make poses properly. Once that's out of the way, you can practice yoga from the comfort of your motorhome. As with weight lifting, there are countless online yoga workouts out there. As for equipment, all that you will really need is a decent yoga mat and some breathable, closely fitting yet comfortable clothes.

If you are just getting started with working out regularly, it might seem a little overwhelming at first. Ease yourself in by setting a goal of 10 minutes of exercise per day for a week or two followed by 20 minutes per day for a week or two and so on. Before you know it, you'll be looking forward to your workout sessions, and your RV adventures will be that much more enjoyable!
