For many people, the motorhome may be their first experience with a diesel engine. Diesel is well suited because of the robust amount of torque the engine can create, compared to its gas equivalent. Driving, however, is quite easy in a pusher. The engine is in the rear, so noise is minimal. Suspension on most is air-powered, making the drive very comfortable. The trick to driving is understanding the size of the vehicle, and how to adapt what we know from driving a car to a much larger vehicle.
Thor Motor Coach has smaller diesel pushers starting at 34’. There are ranges in each category of a diesel pusher. Heights range from 12’ to 13’6”. Width is typically 8’6”, excluding the mirrors. Length can vary from 34’ to 45’.

All models built by Thor Motor Coach have different segments of the market it intends to satisfy. In the diesel pusher lines, the Palazzo is the most affordable and smallest. Aria steps up the luxury amenities, chassis size, and overall lengths. Venetian features a single or tag axle design, with high-end features. The Tuscany is the crown jewel of the line-up with the most significant chassis, integrated roof awnings, and high-end luxury appointments.
On the Class C side, the Mercedes-Benz® based models, the Delano and Tiburon offer diesel engines, as do the Omni and Magnitude Super C models.
Each platform has a purpose in the market. Gas motorhomes have maintenance requirements and can be serviced more like a pick-up truck. The cost of a gas motorhome can be significantly less money than diesel. Diesel motorhomes cost more to purchase, operate, and maintain. The diesel chassis is much larger than the gas chassis, and the parts for the frame are very commercial-grade, similar to the components used to build a semi-tractor.
Most diesel pusher motorhomes start at a minimum of 5,000 lbs. and continue up to 15,000 lbs. for the tow hitch capacity. Learn more on Weights, Towing and Capacities.
